Whether you organise a chit or you are a member trying to understand your payments, the maths behind a chit fund is simple once you see it laid out. Use the three modes above: Group Planning to set up a group, Auction to work out what the winner gets and how the discount is shared, and Member to see what you have paid and what is still due.
How to Calculate Monthly Chit Fund Contributions
Monthly contribution per member = monthly chit amount ÷ number of members. The total group value over the full term is the monthly chit amount × the number of months. Each member's total scheduled contribution is their monthly contribution × the number of months.
How to Calculate a Chit Fund Auction Discount
Each month, members who have not yet taken the chit bid for it. The auction discount is the amount the winner agrees to give up. Prize amount = monthly chit amount − auction discount. A higher discount means a smaller prize for the winner and more to share with the others.
How to Calculate Foreman Commission
Foreman commission = monthly chit amount × commission % ÷ 100. On a ₹1,00,000 chit at 5%, that is ₹5,000. Section 21 of the Chit Funds Act, 1982 (as amended in 2019) is commonly cited as setting a statutory maximum of 7% of the chit amount. Treat that as a ceiling subject to current law and your state's rules, not a default rate — always check the latest rules and your agreement.
How Is the Chit Fund Dividend Calculated?
Net distributable discount = auction discount − foreman commission − other agreed expenses. If the group shares it equally, dividend per eligible member = net distributable discount ÷ eligible members. Many groups then reduce each member's next instalment by that dividend — but only if the agreement works that way.
Example of a ₹1 Lakh Chit Fund
- Monthly chit amount: ₹1,00,000, 20 members, 20 months
- Monthly contribution per member: ₹5,000
- Total group value: ₹20,00,000
- Auction discount: ₹10,000 → prize amount ₹90,000
- Foreman commission at 5%: ₹5,000
- Net distributable discount: ₹5,000 → ₹250 per member (equal split)
- Estimated adjusted instalment: ₹5,000 − ₹250 = ₹4,750

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my monthly chit fund contribution?
Divide the monthly chit amount by the number of members. For a ₹1,00,000 chit with 20 members, each member contributes ₹5,000 a month before any dividend adjustment.
How is the prize amount calculated in a chit fund auction?
Prize amount = monthly chit amount − auction discount. If the chit amount is ₹1,00,000 and the winning discount is ₹10,000, the prize amount is ₹90,000.
How is the chit fund auction discount distributed?
The foreman commission and any agreed expenses come out of the discount first. What remains is usually shared among eligible members as a dividend, but the exact method depends on the chit agreement.
How do I calculate dividend per member?
With equal distribution, dividend per member = (auction discount − foreman commission − other expenses) ÷ eligible members. In the ₹1 lakh example, (₹10,000 − ₹5,000) ÷ 20 = ₹250.
What is foreman commission in a chit fund?
It is the fee the foreman (organiser) earns for running the chit, usually a percentage of the chit amount. The Chit Funds Act, 1982 sets a maximum; the actual rate is set in the agreement.
Can every chit fund use equal dividend distribution?
No. Equal distribution is common, but some groups use other rules. Use the method written in your chit agreement.
Does this calculator confirm whether a chit fund is legal?
No. A calculator only performs estimates. Legal compliance depends on the actual arrangement, registration, approvals, agreement and applicable law.
